Satoshi Era Mega Whale Stirs, Shifts a String of 2,000 Vintage Bitcoins in a Single Block Worth $123M

Around 88 days ago, on Dec. 4, 2023, a mysterious mega whale, closely watched by onchain analysts at Bitcoin.com News, made waves again by transferring 2,000 ancient bitcoins from 2010 that was confirmed in a single block. Since March 2020, this entity has relocated a whopping 16,000 bitcoins that had been dormant since the day they were mined.

$123M Worth of Vintage Bitcoins Transferred by Mysterious Mega Whale From 2010

On March 1, 2024, the notorious mega whale, initially detected on March 11, 2020, executed transfers of 2,000 BTC from 2010 through approximately 40 separate transactions. Each transaction involved a 50 BTC coinbase reward originating from 40 unique Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH) addresses. The whale last made an appearance on Dec. 5, 2023.

These funds were then consolidated into a single Pay-to-Script-Hash (P2SH) address, and at the time of this report, the BTC address “3BhsG” is in possession of the entire 2,000 BTC cache. Confirmed at block height 832,648, these 40 transfers mirror the whale’s previous activity, with all originating addresses being established in August, September, October, and November of 2010.

Each address, over 13 years old, saw its first expenditure on March 1, 2024, after sitting dormant. In a parallel move, the whale also relocated the 2,000 bitcoin cash (BCH) tied to these bitcoins, directing them to a known address “qpq4u.”

Bitcoin.com News has caught this same whale on 15 different occasions since 2020 on 3/11/20 – 10/11/20 – 11/7/20 – 11/8/20 – 12/27/20 – 1/3/21 – 1/10/21 – 1/25/21 – 2/28/21 – 3/23/21 – 6/9/21 – 11/10/21 – 11/12/21 – 12/4/23 – 3/1/24.

When initially acquired, the BTC’s value stood at approximately $800 before November 2010, but as of today, its worth has escalated to $123.9 million, according to current exchange rates.

This activity by the mega whale marks a significant event in 2024, as expenditures of 2010 ‘sleeping bitcoin’ have become increasingly scarce. Since 2020, Bitcoin.com News, with assistance from btcparser.com’s blockchain parser, has tracked this whale across 14 separate instances. Since then, the total of 16,000 virgin and vintage BTC moved by this whale is now valued at nearly $991 million.
