Crypto influencers and celebrities’ X accounts hacked

On May 26, the X accounts of various prominent crypto influencers and celebrities were hacked. These popular crypto figures were seen posting and promoting new meme coins, which led to brief price surges. Explore the details of these hacking incidents that took the crypto community to a halt.

GCR’s account shilled ORDI and Luna2

One of the victims was the Gigantic-Cassocked-Rebirth (GCR) account, which belongs to a known crypto investor who profits from contrarian trades. The GCR account has 247,000 followers on X. The account confirmed it had been hacked when the hackers posted content promoting ORDI and Luna 2.0.

The prices for both promoted tokens briefly surged, a sign that the hacker was successful. For ORDI, the price rose by 6%, while Luna 2.0 saw a whopping increase of up to 274%. However, many crypto analysts have stated that this move led to limited gains, as the hacker chose to post two tokens instead of shilling microcap coins. These are also taking crypto casino players by storm, looking for higher stake deposit opportunities caused by the surge.

According to Udi Wertheimer, a Bitcoin developer and Ordinals commentator, there is a wave of ongoing hacking targeting high-profile X accounts. Platform engineers are often absent during long weekends, allowing hackers to use celebrity accounts and post about meme coins, resulting in gains. Wertheimer emphasised the need to be vigilant.

Caitlyn Jenner promoting a new meme coin called ‘JENNER’

Another celebrity account posted about a new meme coin around the same time as the GCR hacking incident. The account was from American media personality Caitlyn Jenner, who promoted a new Solana-based coin called ‘JENNER’. This timing, coinciding with the GCR hack, has raised questions within the crypto community.

Anyhow, after the promotion of the new meme coin, it quickly amassed a $27.1 million market cap in just about eight hours. Along with the post was a video of Jenner further endorsing the coin. Many speculate that this video will likely be a deepfake, created to fool the crypto community.

However, unlike the GCR case where the account was proven to be hacked, Jenner and her manager Sophia Hutchins hosted an X space to affirm the realness of the new coin. They stated that the crypto promotion on Jenner’s account was real, and there was no deepfake involved in any of the promotions.

Rich The Kid posted about a meme coin called ‘RICH’

The famous American rapper Dimitri Leslie Roger, also known as Rich The Kid, did not escape the threat of hacks either. On his verified X account with 2.3 million followers, the rapper was seen posting a link to purchase his new token called ‘RICH’, which was launched on the Solana meme coin creator tool pump.fun.

The coin immediately amassed a $900,000 market cap within the first two hours after the link was posted on the celebrity’s account. The crypto community is eagerly awaiting a statement from Rich The Kid himself.

He will either confirm the legitimacy of the new coin, similar to Caitlyn Jenner’s response, or deny it and prove it was another hacking incident, like the GCR case. No statement has been made, but the post has been deleted from Rich The Kid’s X account.

With the ongoing trend of hacking high-profile X accounts, the crypto community is advised to remain vigilant and prepare for possible price fluctuations, especially those who are active in using and making a stake deposit in online casinos.
