Notably, the Foundation has achieved and maintained carbon neutrality, offsetting the entire network’s 2022 carbon footprint through the groundbreaking approach of onchain carbon credits.
The report highlights a commendable 25% reduction in energy use per transaction on the Solana network since the last update in April 2023. The total emissions from the network have also decreased by 17.5%. Despite these substantial reductions, the Solana Foundation took an extra step by purchasing carbon credits onchain to offset the network’s 2022 emissions.
Breaking new ground, the Solana Foundation executed the entire purchase of carbon credits onchain, showcasing its dedication to innovative and sustainable practices. The Foundation procured nearly 11,000 carbon credits from ecoToken and Sunrise Stake, with ecoToken supporting diverse regenerative projects in the United States and Indonesia, while Sunrise Stake funds the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Indonesia.
Vision for a Sustainable Future
Amira Valliani, Head of Policy at the Solana Foundation, emphasized the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
“With this purchase of carbon credits, we have offset 100% of the network’s emissions. We’re intent on continuing to work with partners across the blockchain industry, NGOs, and governments to drive innovation and solutions for a sustainable future.”
Amira Valliani, Head of Policy at the Solana Foundation
This achievement positions the Solana Foundation as an industry leader in maintaining carbon neutrality, setting the standard for sustainable practices in the blockchain realm. The Foundation remains dedicated to real-time tracking of network emissions at SolanaClimate.com, actively pursuing regenerative programs to counterbalance the network’s carbon output.
